Foundation will award $9,400 for
MASC/MAHS Summer Leadership Camp

The SET SEG Educational Foundation will present $9,400 in scholarship awards, up to a maximum of $1,250 per school, to allow high school students to attend the 2010 Michigan Association of Student Councils/Michigan Association of Honor Societies (MASC/MAHS) Summer Leadership Camp. This is the fourth year scholarships will be awarded by the SET SEG Educational Foundation, which was established in April 2005 to help students achieve their educational goals and become tomorrow’s leaders.

IMPORTANT! Read this before you apply

  • All public high schools in Michigan are eligible to apply for the scholarships. However, districts that previously recieved a scholarship from the Foundation will NOT be eligible to apply until three years after receiving the award.
  • Only one high school per district may receive a SET SEG Educational Foundation Leadership Camp scholarship.
  • The high school principal AND Honor Society or Student Council adviser must jointly sign and submit one letter of recommendation, in accordance with the application process.
  • High schools receiving scholarships may determine the number of students receiving awards and the amount of funding granted to students, provided that individual awards do not exceed the cost of camp enrollment, which is $400 per student.
  • Scholarship presentations to the winning high schools will take place in May at the districts’ Board of Education meetings.

What students do at the MASC/MAHS Summer Leadership Camp
Students are placed in random leadership groups (separated from their schoolmates), which are supervised by two staff members. Throughout the week, students participate in interactive and experiential lessons that guide them through various aspects of leadership (see details below). The students also are responsible for completing skill-building tasks daily, including developing leadership challenges, News of the Day presentations, camp-wide mixers, leadership skits, service projects, photo display boards, reflection sessions and a variety of other activities and presentations.

What skills students develop/learn at the Leadership Camp
There are a variety of lessons and skills that students will be exposed to throughout their days at camp. Below is a list of some of the general concepts participants will assimilate. Students are divided into camps for first-, second- and third-year participants. Each camp experiences a unique curriculum that varies slightly from those listed, and expands on various other leadership components:

  • Communication Skills
  • Organization & Managerial Skills
  • Service & Citizenship
  • Group Process
  • Goal Setting

During the year following scholarship presentations, the SET SEG Educational Foundation will contact the staff of award-winning schools and request they and/or their students evaluate their experiences with the MASC/MAHS Leadership Camp and/or the SET SEG Educational Foundation. This information will help the Foundation continue its philanthropy by supporting and advancing public education in Michigan and aiding in the furtherance of student achivement.
